FIELDS Software

FIELDS Rapid Assessment Tools

Rapid Assessment Tools, or R.A.T., is a standalone windows application that combines global positioning information from a GPS device with single point or continuous field sample data. R.A.T. stores the sample data with its GPS location in a flat file and plots these results in a dynamic, two-dimensional display in real-time. In the software, data can be viewed with aerial photography, polygon boundaries, and sample designs to allow for immediate data availability, analysis, and use in the field. The collected data can also be exported using standard U.S. EPA data formats such as SCRIBE and ESRI Shapefile.

FIELDS Tools MenuFIELDS Tools for ArcGIS©

The FIELDS Team has developed a set of tools that integrate the power of geographic information systems (GIS), imaging software, global positioning system (GPS), and in-field sampling and analysis technology. The FIELDS tools are a collection of ArcView extensions and a stand-alone 2D/3D software (F/S Plus) that utilize published methodology for each step in the characterization process. The FIELDS software forms the foundation for a system that provides data analysis and interpretation for environmental decision-making. The results allow project managers to evaluate the extent of contamination and hot spot sizes, estimate health risks, prioritize site goals, and weigh potential actions. Users include U.S. EPA Regions, NOAA’s coastal restoration scientists, State and Tribal agencies, as well as the private and academic community.

FIELDS Modules

Sample Design
This is a sampling design demostration The Sampling Module creates statistically based sampling plans in GIS. The module helps the user determine the number of samples that should be taken and then places the sampling locations on a basemap. The latitude and longitude information can be easily exported to a GPS unit, allowing the user to immediately navigate to sampling points for data collection.

Database Query
This is a database query demostration The FIELDS query tool can be used to query all results, the maximum result in 3-dimensions, the maximum result in 2-dimensions, and results by interval (e.g., 0-6 inches, 6-12 inches) either using a depth-weighted average algorithm or the maximum results per interval. The input data can be from a FIELDS-defined data table or imported from databases such as STORET, EQuIS, or NOAA’s Query Manager database. If the input data has field names or types that do not match the FIELDS-defined data table format, an interactive GUI allows users to match their field names with the FIELDS-required names.

Modeling

The Modeling Module applies various interpolation methods on sample data to contour the data.

2D-Modeling
This is a 2D Modeling demostration The queried data can be contoured (interpolated) to create estimates at unsampled locations using Dr. Dave Watson’s Natural Neighbor algorithm or ArcView’s Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) algorithm. The FIELDS Tools also include a cross validation routine that generates root mean square errors (RMSE) of estimation for permutations of IDW parameters number of neighbors and power

Analysis Tools
In addition, the FIELDS Tools can perform Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessments. These assessments meet U.S. EPA guidelines (RAGS and ERAGS) for risk assessment.

This is the The Mass and Volume Tool demostration The Mass and Volume Tool estimates the mass of contaminant in soil or sediment and the volume of contaminated soil or sediment.

This is the Remediation Tool demostration The Remediation Tool estimates the area required to be cleaned in order to meet a site-wide clean-up goal or meet a block-based clean-up goal.

F/S Plus

This is a 3D Viewer Modeling demostrationF/S Plus is a stand-alone application developed in conjunction with the SADA software developers. F/S Plus can display point data, gridded data (interpolated values), and DXFs. Some of the visualization functions include: zoom, rotation, transparency, point size manipulation, scaling, and slicing. In addition, it has a 2D/3D IDW and kriging interpolation modules that create gridded values that can be displayed with or without the original point data.
