Site Description
The Morris Arsenic Dump site is located approximately one mile northeast of the town of Morris, Minnesota. In the early 1940s, approximately 1,500 pounds of arsenic-laced grasshopper bait was reportedly buried in a gravel pit near the intersection of Highways 28 and 59. The subsequent construction of the Highway 59 bypass through the general location of the burial site made the discovery of the exact location of the materials difficult. It has been presumed that the arsenic was mechanically dispersed, during highway construction, since topsoil cleared from the site for roadbed preparation was later spread along the side slopes.Site Responsibility
This site was addressed through federal actionsThreats and Contaminants
Arsenic was detected in the groundwater. The site does not pose a health hazard to the public due to the direction of groundwater movement from the site and the minimal population concentration within the site area. In addition, levels of arsenic found in the soils at the site are within the range of natural levels.Cleanup Progress
Although arsenic was detected in the groundwater, the site does not pose a health hazard to the public due to the direction of groundwater movement from the site and the minimal population concentration within the site area. In addition, levels of arsenic found in the soils at the site are within the range of natural levels. The United States Environmental Protection Agency conducted a thorough investigation in 1985 to determine the type and extent of contamination at the site. The results of the investigation indicated that the site poses no imminent health hazards to the public. Therefore, no cleanup actions were necessary. A Record of Decision recommending no further action at the site was signed in August 1985. The site was deleted from the National Priorities Lists on March 7, 1986.Contacts
