Host for the National Brownfields Conference
New Orleans, Louisiana, November 16-18, 2009
Ways you can participate in the National Brownfields Conference:
- Be an Endorser. Conference endorsers are companies, organizations and agencies that support the Conference by offering marketing and outreach to their members, clients and constituents. There is no cost to endorse the event.
- Be an Exhibitor. As an exhibitor, your booth will get plenty of uninterrupted face-time with over 5000 attendees.
- Join a Committee. There are several committees helping to plan the Conference, and your participation would be greatly appreciated. Contact: Tonia Biggs, Brownfields Conference Coordinator (biggs.tonia@epa.gov).
Selections have been made for the 2009 Assessment, Cleanup, and Revolving Loan Fund Grant competition. See Grants & Funding on the National Brownfields and Land Revitalization website for a list of selectees from Region 6 as well as the nation. Guidelines for the 2010 Brownfields grant competition are tentatively expected to be released in late July or early August. For more information concerning this competition, please contact a Brownfields Team member. Kansas State University has developed a web-based tool to assist in the grant writing process; TAB EZ was created as a public service to eligible candidates interested in applying for an EPA Brownfields assessment or cleanup grant.
Brownfields Success Story
Santa Fe , New Mexico - The citizens of Santa Fe partnered to create the Railyard Master Plan and direct the sustainable redevelopment of an essentially abandoned 50-acre railyard site. Their vision honored the Railyard's history and engaged the culture, arts, and landscape of the city. Contaminants, consisting of lead, other metals, as well as petroleum and petroleum products, in the soil and groundwater were characterized through funding from an EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant and Targeted Brownfields Assessment. The New Mexico Environment Department also provided assessment services. A grand opening celebration was held recently to herald this successful blending of live-in artist studios, galleries, museums, farmers' market, retail shops, office space, and over thirteen acres of open space with a park, plaza, and pedestrian promenade. Trains continue to arrive and depart from the depot. The Railyard practices water harvesting and will use other innovative, environmentally responsible systems.

Tehnical Assistance for Brownfields (TAB) Program
The TAB Program provides geographically-based technical assistance and training to communities and other stakeholders on brownfields issues with the goal of increasing the community's understanding and involvement in brownfields cleanup and revitalization. The TAB Program serves as an independent source of information assisting communities with community involvement, better understanding the health impacts of brownfield sites, science and technology relating to brownfield site assessment, remediation, and site preparation activities, brownfield finance questions, and information on integrated approaches to brownfield cleanup and redevelopment.

Region 6 Brownfields Accomplishments
Since the Brownfields Program inception in 1996, Region 6 grantees have been awarded more than $50 million in brownfields competitive grants. Region 6 is proud to report that over 1000 sites have been assessed, 13,800 jobs created, and $2.4 billion leveraged in redevelopment.
