EPA fines Oklahoma company for lack of oil spill prevention
EPA has penalized Burton Oil Properties of Ratliff City, Oklahoma, $600 for violating federal Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure regulations outlined under the Clean Water Act.
A federal inspection of an oil production facility located at Highway 76 and Old Highway 76 in Fox, Carter County, Oklahoma, on December 16, 2008, found containers, foundation and supports were not periodically examined for deterioration and maintenance needs. Also, above ground valves and pipelines were not examined periodically to maintain them in proper condition.
As part of an Expedited Settlement Agreement with EPA, Burton Oil Properties has corrected all violations and provided certification that the problems have been corrected.
The Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure regulations require that oil production facilities are properly maintained and that measures are taken to prevent and contain spills, such as creating berms around production areas. Preventing spills from running off into streams and lakes or seeping in underground water sources protects our nation’s water and helps ensure clean water for drinking and recreation.
