Underground Storage Tank Program. In our region, about 90,000 underground storage tanks store petroleum or hazardous substances that can harm the environment and human health if the USTs release their stored contents. In 2008, nearly 1,000 releases were reported from underground storage tanks in region 6. Today, about 6,000 clean ups are waiting to be completed. Learn more about the Region's underground storage tank program.

Neighborhoods are often plagued by contamination from leaking underground storage tanks. Contamination seeps underground tainting soil, can percolate to the surface, and often finds its way to shallow groundwater. Often these facilities are abandoned or under state enforcement orders for clean up by unwilling owners. In 2008, the State of Texas received about $2.7 million and completes about 550 cleanups a year.

Recovery Act of 2009. The Recovery Act sends much needed federal dollars to assess and clean up underground storage tank leaks. Infusion of critically needed dollars  - nearly quadruple typical annual funding for our five states - will help speed recovery and investment in many of our communities. Learn about underground storage tanks cleanup funding from the Recovery Act.
