Nucor Steel Louisiana Permits
Air Resources
In May 2010, Nucor Steel was issued permits to allow construction and operation of a 6-million-ton-per-year pig iron manufacturing facility near the town of Convent, in St. James Parish. It will be built at the former Shintech site, immediately outside the area of Baton Rouge that has been documented as not reaching clean-air goals.
The facility will contain two blast furnaces, two groups of non-recovery coke ovens (280 total ovens), a 2.75-million-ton-per-year sinter plant, several smaller process areas, storage piles, and material transfer operations.
