Ambient Toxicity Monitoring Program

Data Management
Regional staff enter and maintain test data in a Microsoft Access for Windows relational database. Four primary data tables contain (1) station location details, (2) toxicity test conditions and results, (3) sample metadata and chemical test results, and (4) test descriptions (Figure 1). State station identifiers, laboratory sample identification numbers, and a test identification number are key fields that link the tables.
The software maintains referential integrity between the tables and precludes test data entry where supporting data is nonexistent. Data entry forms contain validation checks that prevent entry of erroneous numeric values. A minimum of 10% of the computerized data forms are rechecked to verify accurate data entry. After each data entry session, data table files are exported in a dBase III format and stored on the Region 6 WATLAN server in the subdirectory "f:\user\share\6wq-e\6wq-ew\watermon\toxnet\dbase". All files are backed up on a weekly basis by local area network administrators. The database documentation is stored in hardcopy form by the EPA Region 6 Watershed Management Section. Copies of the documentation are available upon request. Upon completion of EPA's STORET database modernization, all data will be uploaded into the new system. The data tables may be exported for use with other relational database software, after reestablishing links. Also, some or all of the data fields may be exported in a single table for use with spreadsheet programs. Requests for data or information may be sent to Charlie Howell or Mike Schaub. |
