EPA Educates and Connects with Stakeholders at Missouri Brownfields Conference

The EPA Region 7 Brownfields staff participated in the Missouri Brownfields Conference, as part of the 37th annual Missouri Waste Coalition/Management Conference on June 22-23, 2009. The conference promoted educational activities, and provided an opportunity to network with other stakeholders to accomplish the goals of addressing brownfields throughout Region 7. This annual conference is intended to serve as a platform to help keep industry, government officials, and private citizens informed of the latest developments in the industry, and as a forum where opinions can be voiced.

Region 7 presented information on the Brownfields Program at sessions throughout the first day. Brownfields and public affairs staff also operated an EPA booth to conduct brownfields outreach. Staff shared information on the brownfields program, and assisted participants by informing them of opportunities to obtain brownfields funding to address abandoned properties in local communities. Local governments, industry, state officials and staff, EPA staff, and private citizens were all represented at the conference.

Since its inception in 1995, EPA’s Brownfields Program has grown into a proven, results-oriented program that has changed the way contaminated property is perceived, addressed, and managed. EPA's Brownfields Program is designed to empower states, communities, and other stakeholders in economic redevelopment to work together in a timely manner to prevent, assess, safely clean up, and sustainably reuse brownfields.
