Hawthorne Elementary School Composting Project
February 18, 1998

Join the students at Hawthorne Elementary School as they present ways to conserve natural resources in an inner-city neighborhood and tour their new compost station.  The program will be Thursday, February 19, 1998, 5:30 p.m., at Hawthorne Elementary School, 1100 Waverly Street, Kansas City, Kansas.  The guest speakers will be Dr. Jerry P. Franklin, Acting Superintendent of Kansas City, Kansas, Public School District 500, and Wes Adell, McPherson County Commissioner, Lindsborg, Kansas, who will talk about how communities can make an environmental difference.

KIDZONE students at Hawthorne Elementary School, kindergarten to fifth grade, helped plan and build the compost station with the guidance of adult mentors from EPA and the National Civilian Conservation Corps/Americorps and collaboration between District 500 and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Kansas City to provide structured learning activities for students after regular school hours.
