The following is an article which appeared in the February 19, 1998 edition of the Kansas City Kansan.  

Hawthorne to host environmental celebration  

YouthFriends, Hawthorne Elementary Kidzone, Kansas City, KS., Public Schools, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Northwest Boys and Girls Club of KC. have worked together for six weeks to create an Environmental Celebration at 5:30 p.m. today at Hawthorne Elementary, 1100 Waverly Ave., KC, KS 66104.  Phone 551-3685 for directions.  

Conserving natural resources in the inner-city neighborhood and recognizing the new compost station in the school yard are the themes of the celebration.  

Words of encouragement by Superintendent Jerry P. Franklin, a welcome by Executive Director Dave Smith, boys and Girls Club of Greater KC., and special guest, Wes Adell, McPherson County Commissioner, Lindsborg, KS., will challenge the children.  

Adell will engage the children and community members in conversation about how they can make an environmental difference.  

Additional project components will include service learning, and creating a Kidzone webpage on the Youth Page of the National EPA web site.  Also, Northwest Boys and Girls Club will take pictures and conduct interviews for the web page., with Gary Wicks, (U.S. EPA) assisting.  

Mentors from U.S. will be consultants and on site YouthFriends for the children.  

Americorp Members will be mentors who facilitate the project with Kidzone staff and children.  

YouthFriends served as the coordinator the adult mentor component for the project.  

Wells Blue Bunny and Youth Friends will provide refreshments - leftovers for the compost naturally!
