EPA to Host Community Meeting and Conduct Sampling Activities - Annapolis, Iron County, Missouri
INTRODUCTION
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 invites the public to participate in a community meeting Thursday, May 25, 2006 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss EPA’s intent to conduct lead sampling in areas of the Annapolis community.
BACKGROUND
In September 2003, EPA authorized a time-critical removal action for the Annapolis Lead Mine Site. EPA surveyed the site for a lead soil assessment and potential soil removal action. EPA decided to cap the lead contaminated mine tailings.
The Site was placed on the National Priorities List (NPL) on July 22, 2004. A site is listed on the NPL when it is ranked as a long-term risk to human health and the environment. It was listed due to elevated levels of heavy metals, particularly lead, which were present throughout the site. The metals were the result of mining operations conducted from 1919 to 1940. The lead mine was located near Sutton Branch Creek, a tributary of Big Creek. The mining and processing generated chat piles and tailings, collectively known as mining wastes, which are sources of the contaminants of concern. These wastes may have been used as aggregate for driveways, sandboxes, and other uses in Annapolis. In addition, surface water bodies located downstream from Big Creek contained elevated concentrations of site-related hazardous substances that could pose a threat to recreational fisheries and wetlands in the area.
The mine area was addressed in the time-critical removal action. The Sutton Branch Creek Floodplain, adjacent to and downstream from the mining area, will be addressed as Operable Unit-1, and Big Creek will be addressed as a separate portion of Operable Unit-2.
SAMPLING ACTIVITIES
The areas scheduled for sampling in and around Annapolis include:
- Residential Properties
- School Yards
- Church Properties
- Other properties that are deemed attractive to young children
Soil samples will be collected in all of the above-mentioned areas with an increased focus on gardens, children’s play areas and bare soils. The samples will be analyzed for lead and other heavy metals. The results of the sampling will be provided to the community.
The field work is expected to begin mid-June to early summer, and should last 30 – 45 working days.
EPA will host a public meeting to provide information and answer questions on the upcoming residential sampling of yards in the community. The meeting will be held:
