Water Sampling and Maintenance Activities, Annapolis Lead Mine Site, Annapolis, Missouri

Introduction

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) will visit the Annapolis Lead Mine Superfund Site March 25 – 28, 2008.  The purpose of the visit is to conduct water monitoring at Sutton Branch Creek and to conduct site maintenance activities.  EPA and MDNR will sample Sutton Branch Creek upstream of the historical mining area.  EPA and MDNR will also sample Big Creek upstream and downstream of the mouth of Sutton Branch Creek.

SAMPLING ACTIVITIES

The purpose of the sampling is to monitor the effectiveness of previous response actions taken at the Site.  Organisms, stream sediment, and surface water samples will be collected at each sampling location.

EPA and MDNR will plant trees in the open areas of the historical mining area and in the open areas of the Sutton Branch Creek bank buffer north of Highway 49.  The purpose for planting trees in this area is to increase the stability of the site which will reduce erosion.  A total of 1,015 trees will be planted.  The types of trees that will be planted include Sycamore, Redbud, Black Locust, Smooth Sumac, Short-leaf Pine, Black Oak, White Oak, Hickory Mix, and Nut Tree Mix.

NEXT STEPS

EPA will continue to monitor the Annapolis Lead Mine Site until September 30, 2008.  Afterwards, MDNR will continue future operation and maintenance of the site.
