Local Governments

There are many things a local government can do to address the issue of climate change.  They have unique opportunities because of their control over budgets, policies, and programs; their jurisdiction over land use, transportation, electricity, and natural gas; and their lawmaking abilities.  Local governments are taking the lead across the country by completing greenhouse gas emissions inventories and climate action plans, engaging their communities in greenhouse gas reduction challenges, leading by example, enabling themselves with policies and ordinances, and participating in regional initiatives.

EPA Region 8 has developed a new resource for local governments – the Local Climate Action Wiki.  It contains a variety of tailored information to support actions at the local level to address climate change.  The wiki includes:

Areas of Climate Action Climate Action Plans
Grants and Other Financing EPA Climate Protection Partnerships
Training and Events Greenhouse Gas Inventories
News Corner Discussion Forum

On the Local Climate Action wiki, you can:

  • Learn how other communities are addressing climate change in this region
  • Showcase your climate action plans, policies, programs, and success stories
  • Access the latest information from EPA and other federal agencies related to climate action planning, funding opportunities, climate change science, etc.
  • Get updates on EPA's policy and regulatory advances related to greenhouse gases
  • Request information and assistance from EPA and other municipalities, and post comments or questions
  • Invite others to help you write a document, or plan a meeting or other event

We are inviting local governments to join the wiki and take advantage of this unique web resource.  Wikis add another dimension to information sharing and collaboration beyond the traditional web site by offering interactive communication and content management by users.  Many groups and organizations have pioneered the use of wikis with successful and beneficial results.
