What is GIS?
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer system that manages data identified
by their locations (geographically referenced). Examples of GIS data are county
boundaries, land use, and pollution-monitoring locations. With GIS, data can be
displayed, assembled, stored, and manipulated. Such data are frequently displayed
as maps.
GIS technology can be used for scientific investigations, natural resource
management, and development planning. For example, a GIS system could:
1. Allow emergency planners to easily calculate emergency response times
in the event of a natural disaster.
2. Use water quality and land use data to identify wetlands that need protection
from pollution.
3. Create presentation-quality maps.

Region 8 GIS Data
You can download ARC files from our data warehouse (click on "E00"). The elevation
and hillshaded relief are grids which have been "tarīd" but are
not "e00"export
files. All of the data files are in Unix "gzipīd" Arc/Info 8.01 format.
If you do not have the GZIP program, you can download it from
www.shareware.com.
For a detailed description of each data set click on "META".
NOTE: If your browser strips the ".gz" extension from the file, you will need
to first rename it (<filename>.e00.gz or <filename>.tar.gz) and
then "gunzip"it before importingor "un-tar"ingit.
