Description:
Potential Natural Vegetation for Region 8
Abstract:
"Potential natural vegetation is defined as the vegetation that would
exist today if humans were removed from the scene and if the plant
succession after their removal were telescoped into a single moment.
The time compression eliminates the effects of future climatic
fluctuations, while the effects of human's earlier activities are
permitted to stand. The potential natural vegetation is a particularly
important object of research because it reveals the biological potential of
all sites" (p. 89)
This coverage was developed by the Florida State University Department
of geography in 1975 and is based on A.W. Kuchler's map of 1966.
Purpose:
This coverage is suitable for use in Arc/Info and related software.
Intended use of data:
Mapping of potential natural vegetation.
Supplemental_Information:
Limitations_of_Data:
This coverage is not for delineating actual vegetation.
Procedures:
This coverage was created by the FSU Dept. of Geography by digitizing
from A.W. Kuchler's Potential Natural Vegetation map of 1966.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The code indicated as VEG in the item descriptions is a link to the
VEG.DAT look-up table. This data listing describes the codes with
both a common and latin name. "In general, the names of shrubs and
forbs adopted herin are those used by scientists considered most
authoritative on the vegetation of their respective regions. Taxonomic
plant names, however, may change sometimes, and authors may disagree on
which names should be used, but that problem can usually be solved by
consulting the following source material:
_Check List of Native and Naturalized Trees of the United States_,
Elbert L. Little Jr.
_Manual of the Grasses of the United States_, A.S. Hitchcock and
Agnes Chase" (p. 89)
