Environmental Indicators and Fact Sheets
for High Ranked Facilities in Region 8
"Environmental Indicators" ("EIs") are used by EPA to determine if contamination is being mitigated at or from facilities. There are two EPA Environmental Indicators: (1) "Human Health Exposures Under Control", and (2) "Migration of Contaminated Ground Water Under Control."
A general definition of Current Human Exposures Under Control is that there are no unacceptable human exposures to contamination of concern that can be reasonably be expected under current land use and ground water use conditions. A general definition of Migration of Contaminated Ground Water Under Control is that the migration of the contaminated ground water has stabilized and that monitoring will be conducted to confirm that the contaminated ground water remains within the original area of contaminated ground water. These environmental indicators are often achieved with containment, limitations on access and use, and stabilization measures. They are not a substitute for achieving final remedial measures. They are measured at a point in time and their status must be changed if the environmental conditions change. The accomplishment of the environmental indicators is carefully documented using the Documentation of Environmental Indicator Determination forms.
A determination of "YES" denotes a facility with the named indicator under control. A determination of "NO" or "IN" (insufficient data) denotes a facility not under control.

Note: Region 8 has met the GPRA FY2005 Goal for the Achievement of Environmental Indicators.
Region 8 states met the FY2005 GPRA goals of 95% for Human Health Exposures Under Control and have exceeded the goal of 70% for Groundwater Migration Under Control with an accomplishment of 85%.
On October 1, 2005, the Region 8 GPRA baseline for Corrective Action was expanded to 60 facilities with the addition of five new sites. The GPRA goal for FY2008 is 95% of the new baseline for the Human Health indicator and 81% for the Groundwater indicator. Additionally, in 2005, two new measures were added to the GPRA Goal for 2008 - Facility-wide Remedy Selection and Facility-wide Remedy Construction Completion.
Note: Region 8 has met the GPRA FY2008 Goals for Groundwater Migration, Remedy Selection and Remedy Construction Completion.
Region 8 states have exceeded the FY2008 GPRA goals of 81% of the expanded baseline for Migration of Contaminated Groundwater Under Control, 50% for Remedy Selection, and 30% for Remedy Construction Completion.
