Enforcement & Compliance Annual Results
Mike Gaydosh, Assistant Regional Administrator, Enforcement, Compliance, and Environmental Justice, speaks about 2009 environmental improvements and environmental protection accomplishments in EPA Region 8. Through enforcement program efforts, Region 8 leveraged successful agreements with regulated entities that reduced pollution and provided a necessary deterrent against future violations of environmental laws. These actions prevented millions of pounds of pollutants from reaching our air, land, and water and secured millions of dollars in pollution control investments that will protect human health and the environment for many years to come.

Rocky Mountain Greener Venues Video
Colorado's biggest sports and entertainment venues are working with EPA to improve the long-term sustainability of their operations. In January 2010, these venues teamed up to produce a promo video for EPA's “Our Planet, Our Stuff, Our Choice” video contest. The high-energy video, "The Assist," features some of Colorado's most recognizable mascots and venue representatives. The goal of EPA's video contest is to promote awareness about the importance of reducing waste and environmental stewardship. Click here to watch the Greener Venues video (.wmv file, 39 MB, 2:54).

Wetlands & Wonder: Reconnecting Children with Nearby Nature.
As more Americans dwell in cities and suburbs, our society becomes increasingly distanced from the natural world. This absence of everyday connections to nature has many negative effects-especially for children.
Pockets of remaining wetland in developed areas often provide the easiest access to nature. Yet these wetlands may be degraded and go unnoticed.
Urban and suburban wetlands are valuable resources to be restored, protected and enjoyed. These remnants of the natural world in the human landscape can play a key role in reconnecting people to nearby nature-thereby improving the health of our children and our communities.
Renovate Right - Work Lead-Safe
If your home was built before 1978 assume it has lead-based paint and take the proper precautions to protect you and your family when you renovate, repair or paint.
Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips. This harmful dust can end up in the air or on surfaces, floors and soil around your home. If children ingest or breathe in this dust they can become lead poisoned and get very sick. Lead can also harm the fetuses of pregnant women.
If you are hiring a contractor to perform an improvement or repair on a pre-1978 home, childcare facility, or school make sure they are a certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. If you plan to do the renovation or repair yourself, use lead-safe work practices such as containing dust inside the work area, using dust minimizing work practices, and conducting a careful cleanup when you are done.
