40 CFR Part 503 - Standards for the Use or Disposal of Sewage Sludge
Biosolids Generation Use Disposal. This report is to broaden the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) series of solid waste studies by quantifying the amount of biosolids managed by municipal solid waste (MSW) facilities This report focuses on biosolids generated by publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) and the subsequent management practices used by POTWs for treating and then recycling or disposing of biosolids
Biosolids Storage. This guidance document was written to provide a set of consistent Recommended Management Practices for the field storage of biosolids. It identifies three critical control points for managing the system: the wastewater treatment facility, the transportation process, and the field storage site. It provides the elements needed for good site design and operation. This document also stresses the continuing need for partnership and good ommunication between the biosolids generators and managers responsible for storage and land application to ensure community-friendly operations. The guide targets management practices to address three critical issues: air quality (odors), water quality, and sanitation (pathogens), which have potential environmental, public health and community relations impacts.

The above report gives broad information on significance of pathogen control to protect public health and environment, current federal requirements, vector attraction issues, sampling and analysis protocols to meet quantitative requirements, approvals from EPA Pathogen Equivalency Committee and general references and additional resources. The Appendices provide additional information on determination of volatile solids and residence time for digestion, sample preparation and analytical methods for meeting the Part 503 pathogen reduction requirements, tests for demonstrating vector attraction reduction, and additional references on pathogen research and technical background to regulations.
