Objectives and Targets
Region 9 Policy on Carbon Neutrality and Zero Waste
The Region 9 Office has set two new sustainability goals: to achieve carbon neutrality and zero-waste to landfill by January 1, 2012. Region 9 Policy on Carbon Neutrality and Zero Waste (2 pp, 266K)
Significant Aspect: Air Emissions
Objective:
Reduce the environmental impact of our business travel and commuting practices.
Targets:
- Implement R9 Green Transportation Plan through staff outreach and lowering barriers to using remote access technologies and greener vehicles.
- Procure 2 electric vehicles by December 2013.
Significant Aspect: Energy Use
Objective:
Reduce EPA energy use
Targets:
- Establish Energy Use baseline by December 31, 2013.
- Upgrade to more energy efficient lighting system (with anticipated 33% minimum energy savings) by December 31, 2013.
- Obtain Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to mitigate Region 9 fiscal year energy purchases.
- Set up Real Time energy use display in lobby by December 31, 2013.
Significant Aspect: Material Use (Paper Use)
Objective:
Reduce paper use
Targets:
- Develop new baseline by June 30, 2012
- 10 % reduction from new baseline by December 31, 2013
Region 9 Green Meetings
and Conference Policy
This policy (PDF) (27 pp, 4.8M) was signed on December 23, 2009 and aims to reduce the environmental footprint of Region 9 conferences and meetings.

Significant Aspect: Waste (Green Meetings)
Objective:
Implement the Region 9 Green Conference and Meeting Policy (PDF) (27 pp, 4.8M)
Targets: (Note: All target dates are December 31, 2013)
- Implement notification of GMP in all first floor conference room reservation confirmations.
- Evaluate effectiveness through survey to all who use first floor conference rooms.
- Create database of sustainability capabilities of hotels used.
- Develop tracking system for GMP results
Significant Aspect: Waste (Purchasing Green Products)
Objective:
Improve regional purchasing to go beyond price and performance to include environmental attributes
Targets:
- Finalize Green Procurement Plan by September 30, 2012.
- Educate 100% of new purchase card holders on EPP
Significant Aspect: Waste (Zero Waste)
Objective:
Increase / improve office composting and recycling
Targets:
- Maintain a diversion rate of at least 90% annually.
- Achieve a 90 % diversion rate (excluding paper recycling) by December 31, 2013.
Significant Aspect: Water Use
Objective:
Decrease water use
Targets:
- Develop a baseline by February 29, 2012.
- Achieve 20 % reduction from 2011 baseline by December 31, 2013.
Once Objectives and Targets are set, Environmental Management Programs are established to achieve them.
