EPA's enforcement efforts in the Pacific Southwest for Fiscal Year 2003 achieved significant results: a 25% increase in enforcement actions to address serious environmental problems and ensure fairness in the marketplace. EPA also continued its ongoing collaboration with state and tribal partners to help facilities comply with our nation's environmental laws.

In fiscal year 2003, EPA's Pacific Southwest Regional Office pursued 344 civil enforcement actions, including administrative orders, penalty actions, field citations and official requests to the Department of Justice to file lawsuits. These actions resulted in the $6.3 million in penalties, and legal settlements securing over $254 million for cleanups. Some of these settlements required parties to undertake "Supplemental Environmental Projects," worth a total of $708 thousand, that will benefit communities through pollution prevention and reduction, and better emergency response capabilities. In addition, EPA investigations, in some cases, led to requests to the Department of Justice for criminal prosecutions.

In addition, EPA's strong enforcement action in fiscal 2003 in the Pacific Southwest prevented the release of over six million pounds of pollutants into the environment annually.
