The certificates of appreciation were handed out during last year's federal facilities conference in Berkeley, CA. They are also framed in 100% post-consumer recycled plastic detergent and milk bottles! (Buying recycled is part of recycling! - and is mandated by Executive Order 13101 - Greening the Government)
- The Federal Environmental Roundtable
The Environmental Roundtable is a group of environmental professionals from Northern California who find it worthwhile to network with their peers. The Roundtable was formed in 1993 to identify common concerns about solid waste issues; however, in recent years it has provided a forum for networking and information exchange on many environmental issues, including recycling and waste management and reduction. We would like to acknowledge the three co-chairs of the Roundtable:

Dolores is the Recycling Program Manager at Travis Air Force Base. She provides technical guidance and support in the every day management and operation of the Recycling and Solid Waste Reduction Program. She is a 'motivating spirit" to the over 16,000 military and civilian personnel and their families who live and work at Travis. She has spearheaded the implementation of a strong "Buy Recycled" program at the Base. - Mark Reiss
Mark is the Business Development Manager for the Marketing Division, Federal Supply Service, GSA Region 9. He has been instrumental in expanding the selection of "green" products in the store and promoting green products to the federal community in Region 9. He has initiated special sales programs with federal buyers which has resulted in a 30% increase in recycled-content copy paper sales. He has spearheaded efforts to inform federal agencies about new environmental mandates and to market recycled products under the Buy Green Initiative of Planet GSA. - Cynthia Pang
Cynthia is the Emergency Response Coordinator for the Navy Region Hawaii. Her work at the Naval complex in Pearl Harbor was instrumental in shaping the Navy's program for compliance with the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) in accordance with Executive Order 12856. She created the Navy Region Partnership for Emergency Planning and Preparedness Committee which is made up of representatives from emergency responders, environmental specialists, safety specialists, hazardous materials users, and state and federal representatives. - Janet Herbruck
Janet is a Data collection Technician at the U.S. Postal Service, San Diego District Performance Cluster. Last year, the San Diego Performance Cluster recycled almost 7 tons of undeliverable mail, cardboard, scrap metal, pallets and toner cartridges; the individual every day efforts of Janet in recycling the computer diskettes, ink ribbons and tapes she uses in her job stand out as "taking the next step" and are helping the U.S. Postal Service to meet its commitment to leadership in environmental stewardship. - The Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center, Environmental Quality Division,
in Port Hueneme, CA
The NFESC-EQD has been implementing unique solutions for the environmental problems since 1993. This group of over 100 engineers and scientists have reduced hazardous waste generation with a cost effective and environmentally compliant method to remove major contaminants in ships' bilge waters. The Division has purchased a fleet of electric vehicles to replace gasoline-powered ones, and has developed innovative ways of recycling and reusing wastewater generated from aircraft washing operations. Gary Gasperino is the Director of the EQ Division and accepted on their behalf. - Ernest Lory
Ernest is the Manager of the National Petroleum Remediation Demonstration Site at the Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center in Port Hueneme. Ernie has worked tirelessly to promote and develop a state-of-the-art test and demonstration site for petroleum characterization and remediation innovative technologies. He has encouraged dialogue and cooperation among diverse parties as oil company scientists, university research teams, personnel from other military bases, and state, local and federal regulators. Ernie and his group have helped the environmental community make major strides in understanding the potential for biodegradation of MTBE. - Susan J. Hunt
Susan is a Logistics Management Specialist at the U.S. Geological Survey's Marine Facility in Redwood City, CA. Sue has been a driving force for recycling, waste reduction and green acquisition in the Western Region of the USGS for nearly a decade. She established a USGS Supply Exchange where employees can bring unneeded, lightly used office and laboratory supplies and equipment and shop for the same to fill official needs for free. Other USGS surplus materials have found homes in classrooms and school laboratories. She is legendary for saving resources and landfill space by rescuing items from dumpsters! - Aimee Vincent
Aimee is the Sustainability Coordinator at the Presidio Trust at the nation's newest National Park in San Francisco. She has been instrumental in the development of sustainable design and building guidelines. A site-wide salvage program has promoted the reuse of materials and equipment. A comprehensive recycling program for paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and aluminum is in place, as well as a "green debris" compost program to recycle grass clippings and leaves back into the Presidio environment. Aimee has developed a program to implement Executive Order 13101, including the purchase of re-refined oil, 30% post-consumer copy paper and recycled signposts throughout the Park. Aimee is working to make the Presidio a model of sustainable practices.
