Lisa Jackson Visits the West Coast
EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson covered a lot of ground during her January 2013 visit to the West Coast. She toured the San Francisco Public Utility Commission's new LEED-certified headquarters, presented a Children's Health award to Dr. Jeanne Conry of UC Davis for her work in promoting prenatal care, and visited the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Urban Composting in Baja California

In January 2013, the municipality of Tijuana celebrated the opening of the first urban compost center of its kind for Mexican residents in the border region. In its first year, the center will produce about 150 tons of compost, which will be used in planting trees and for nurseries throughout Tijuana.

A Job Training Success
In December, the Navajo Nation and EPA recognized the first tribal nation graduates of EPA’s Superfund Job Training Initiative. Twenty candidates were selected from a highly competitive field of more than 150 interested residents to participate in the rigorous two-week training course, which included work readiness training and seven days of intense technical training.

Cleaning Up a Santa Barbara County Toxic Dump
EPA completed a $2 million settlement with 290 small parties for the Casmalia Resources Superfund site, a former hazardous waste disposal facility. The settlement requires the parties to pay their share of the estimated $284 million total cost of cleaning up the site and resolves their liability for the more than 23 million pounds of waste they collectively sent to the facility.
