Background Information
The maps on this page were developed by EPA in partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and provide information about opportunities for renewable energy generation on contaminated lands and mining sites in all 50 states. Maps have been developed for EPA tracked sites as well as some state tracked sites. These sites are at varying stages of the cleanup process. Specific information about the status of each site and contact information is available in the Interactive Mapping Tool within each site's pop up box, under Current Environmental Status of Site. You can also search for cleanup status information through EPA's Cleanups in My Communities site.
This page covers potential for eight types of renewable energy. The data guidelines below describe the specific screening criteria used for each renewable energy type.
- Wind: Utility scale, community and non-grid wind generation potential
- Solar: Utility scale concentrating solar power (CSP), utility scale photovoltaic (PV) and non-grid photovoltaic solar generation potential
- Biomass: Biopower facility and biorefinery facility siting potential
- Geothermal: Currently under development
EPA Region 3 Mapping Pilot: Renewable Energy Development on Former Coal Mines
EPA developed an inventory of abandoned coal mine lands and orphaned mineral mines (minerals other than coal) in EPA Region 3 that are not typically tracked by EPA and applied a methodology to factor the Region 3 States' renewable energy portfolios.

The table below contains maps showing properties with renewable energy generation potential on contaminated lands and mining sites in all 50 states. These sites also can be viewed through the Interactive Mapping Tool.
The data contained in this table is also available in the Excel Spreadsheet for EPA Tracked Sites with Clean and Renewable Energy Generation Potential (XLS) (8MB).
Each document in the table below is a one- or two-page PDF file, averaging 437K in size.
