Water Management

Across the country, our growing population is putting stress on available water supplies. Between 1950 and 2000, the U.S. population nearly doubled. However, in that same period, public demand for water more than tripled! This increased demand has put additional stress on water supplies.

Compliance Resources: Polluted stormwater runoff is a leading cause of impairment to the nearly 40 percent of surveyed U.S. water bodies which do not meet water quality standards. Most stormwater discharges are considered point sources and require coverage under an NPDES permit. These resources include technical and regulatory information about the NPDES stormwater program.

Sustainability Resources: EPA promotes environmentally preferable methods for water management. Use these resources to realize improved air quality, urban heat island reduction, habitat creation, water conservation and reuse, and energy savings.
