Hurricane Sandy Response
After a flood, drinking water sources can potentially be contaminated with waste from sewage, septic systems, household chemicals, chemical facilities, oil refineries, and other sources. More questions and answers.
How do I know if my water is safe to drink?
Contaminated water should NOT be used for drinking, making prepared drinks, ice-making, brushing teeth, washing food or preparing food, or for drinking water for pets. Even if your water service has been restored, you must take care not to consume contaminated water.
Many water systems will recommend that customers boil water until they are sure that the water they provide is clear of harmful microorganisms. Local media outlets (radio, television, and newspaper) can provide you with the most up to date information regarding the safety of your local water supply.
To kill all major water-borne bacterial pathogens, bring water to a rolling boil for 1 minute.
