File: README.TXT Virtual Beach (VB2) EPA Version 2.3 U.S. EPA Release, July, 2012 Center for Exposure Assessment Modeling (CEAM) National Exposure Research Lab - Ecosystems Research Division Office of Research and Development (ORD) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) 960 College Station Road Athens, Georgia 30605-2700 706/355-8403 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTENTS SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS DISTRIBUTION INSTALLATION KNOWN DEFICIENCIES DISCLAIMER CONTACTS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Approximately 20 MB of disk space is required for installation. The VB2 application is CPU intensive; a system with a fast CPU and a minimum of 1 GB RAM is recommended. See the Installation.Notes section below for DotNet framework requirements. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- DISTRIBUTION: VB2 software is available for download from the CEAM Web site at the following Uniform Resource Locator (URL): http://www.epa.gov/ceampubl/swater/vb2/index.htm CEAM downloads include the latest VB2 software release, documentation, updates and patches. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLATION: To install VB2: 1) Download the installer application "Install_VB2.zip" from CEAM. Note that you should save this file to a local disk drive; not a network or shared drive. 2) Navigate to the folder where the "Install_VB2.zip" file is stored. Run the file (double-click) to unzip the content (setup.exe and setupvb.msi) Save the SetUp.exe and .msi installer file to a local disk. Double-click the SetUp.exe file and follow the on-screen instruction to copy the model and documentation files onto your system. 3) For VB2 program operation, read the accompanying documentation "Virtual Beach 2 User Guide.doc" located in the "Documentation" sub- directory of the installed application. The User Guide is also available in PDF format on-line here: http://www.epa.gov/ceampubl/swater/vb2/vb23/VirtualBeach2UserGuide.pdf Notes: VB2 is developed with MS Visual Studio 2010, written in C#, uses multiple public domain system components (Weifen Luo Docking UI, ZedGraph, GMap.Net, .net Flee expression parser) and employs a single licensed statistical library (Extreme Optimization). No license or software purchase is required by the user to install and run the application but an internet connection is required for the map control to display maps. Users should have a Microsoft XP or Windows 7 based system with the full DotNet Framework 4.0 to assure proper installation and correct operation. Other older/newer MS system may work but have not been tested. Some VB2.0 application data manipulation and model building operations are compute-intensive so faster CPUs are better than slower but most any newer laptop or desktop system is adequate. Disk space requirements are modest (less than 20 MB) if the DotNet Framework is installed; if not then the Framework installer itself requires ~ 200MB of disk space. If the DotNet Framework 4.0 is not installed on the target system, the VB2 application installer will attempt to download and install the it (and requisite MSI installer 3.1) but this also requires a network connection. Obtain and run the framework installer if necessary. The framework is a requirement and is freely available from Microsoft here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=333325fd-ae52-4e35-b531-508d977d32a6&displaylang=en An administrative user account is required on the target system to install the DotNet framework component. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- KNOWN DEFICIENCIES: See the release notes for updates. If users discover installation or run time problems and/or deficiencies, please contact CEAM.
