Please read this document before installing the BASS system. Technical information and resources for obtaining help with the installation and use of the system are included. __________________________________________________________________________ DOCUMENTATION Copies of the following documents are included within the Internet distribution files Install_BASS_v22.exe and Install_BASS_v22_ModelOnly.exe. Document Name(s) File Name(s) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bioaccumulation and Aquatic System BASS Manual.pdf Simulator (BASS) User's Manual Documentation that aids the user with BASS Data Supplement.pdf parameterization of the BASS model. These documents are also distributed in WordPecfect 10 format. Files with a file name extension of .PDF are in Adobe Acrobat format and require Adobe Acrobat Reader software available at no charge from http://www.adobe.com/. __________________________________________________________________________ INSTALLATION Two installation options exist: and installer for the model-only (for all DOS and Windows 98 systems) and an installer that contains the BASS model, the BASS model GUI and the Output Analyzer (for Windows NT, 2K and XP based systems. Install_BASS_v22_ModelOnly.exe: A WinZip self-extracting file that installs the BASS model working directory containing the BASS model, documentation and examples; for all DOS systems and Windows 98. Install_BASS_v22.exe: An InstallShield executable file that installs the BASS model, the BASS model GUI, Output Analyzer, documentation and example files; recommended for Windows NT/2K/XP. Installation Requirements: A network connection to access the distribution site, CEAM, or, a CD drive to install BASS if installing from CD media (available through the US mail from CEAM.) Approximately 200 MB available hard disk storage to install the model, GUI, data, documentation and tools; approx. 70 MB for the model-only installation option. Microsoft Operating System license: Win NT/2K/XP for the GUI'ed model or, DOS/Win98 for the model only. Recommended Updates: The GUI'ed installer will install the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 on your WinNT/2K/XP system if not already installed. The BASS GUI requires this; it will not interfere with other framework versions you may have installed. Note to Win98 users: if you can successfully install the .Net 1.1 Framework on you system, the GUI will function. Installation anomalies here on testing systems prevent us from supporting the GUI on Win98 based systems. You can download and install the Microsoft .Net 1.1 Framework redistributable from their website: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Search.aspx?displaylang=en We also recommend that you download and install any Critical Updates and Service Packs that are appropriate for your operating system. To Install BASS: Download/save the desired installer from the CEAM website: http://www.epa.gov/ceampubl/swater/bass/BASS-dl.htm Close all applications and execute (double-click) the installation program "Install_BASS_v22.EXE" or "Install_BASS_v22_ModelOnly.exe". Follow the instructions presented by the installation program. Model execution: GUI version: The GUI'ed version of the installer builds shortcuts on your desktop and start menu. Double-click a shortcut to start. You may have to set the BASS Root Directory if you installed to a non-standard disk location or if the .Net framework was installed. Do this from the BASS menu, select File, Set BASS Root. Pick the "BASS v22" folder where you installed the application, click OK, and the BASS Program will read in the data files extracted on disk. Expand the file tree and navigate to the projects directory, select an example projects file (.prj) and select the blue "Run Project" icon on the toolbar. BASS will begin execution of the selected project. Model-only version: Open a command console window (DOS window) in the "BASS v22" directory where you installed the application. Enter "bass_v22 -i projects\\" and BASS will begin simulation with the selected project file. For example, enter; "C:\BASS v22>bass_v22 -i projects\ex_l_Hartwell\twelvemile_creek.prj" Refer to the User's Manual found in the documents directory for detailed operational instructions for both the GUI and model. __________________________________________________________________________ FILE NAME AND CONTENT After installation, the following file and directory structure should exist in the installation directory of your local disk. \BASS v22 - BASS model executables, library files and utility batch files. \bass_cmm_fsh- Contains the BASS fish file and community file generator \documents - Contains the BASS model user documentation. \community - This directory contains community (.cmm) files for various habitats.
