SmartWay
SmartWay Excellence Awards
EPA's SmartWay Excellence Awards recognize high performing partners that are leading the business community to a clean, efficient and more sustainable future for goods movement. The awards honor top truck, intermodal and rail carrier partners that are setting efficiency benchmarks in how they move products and supplies. Top shipping and logistics partners also are recognized for efficiency, and their actions to reduce freight emissions through effective collaboration, advanced technology and operational practices, a robust system for validating and reporting their SmartWay data, communications and public outreach.
The SmartWay awards program gets underway in late spring, and an awards event is then held in the fall. EPA identifies candidates based on their annual SmartWay data reports and leadership actions. Awards will be presented in conjunction with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals' Annual Global Conference in Denver, October 20-23, 2013.

Carrier Awards
SmartWay carrier awardees are recognized for top environmental performance. EPA identifies partners in good standing that are leaders in freight efficiency based on their SmartWay data within their fleet type and size categories. Large and medium/small carriers will be selected based on their performance within 14 fleet categories. Shipper Awards
SmartWay shipper semi-finalists are top-performing partners in good standing. EPA identifies this pool of top-performing candidates for an award based on environmental performance, use of SmartWay carriers to move their freight, and freight mileage with "large" and "medium/small" mileage categories. Shipper semi-finalists are invited to provide EPA with supplemental, qualitative documentation that demonstrates leadership actions that support SmartWay's environmental goals. Final shipper awardees will be selected from the pool of semi-finalists identified by EPA based on the supplemental information they provide. In 2012 EPA recognized its SmartWay partners for the first time using the program's "second generation" suite of freight assessment and carbon tracking tools. During 2010 and 2011, EPA SmartWay and its partners upgraded all of the program's assessment and tracking tools with an improved system to quantify and benchmark the efficiency of moving goods.
These tools are now being used by all SmartWay partners, and the 2012 awards program represented the first year that partners were recognized based on the their performance, as assessed using SmartWay’s "second generation" tools.
