2013 SmartWay Affiliate Challenge
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) SmartWay Transport Partnership is pleased to recognize the efforts and achievements of outstanding SmartWay Affiliates through the 2013 SmartWay Affiliate Challenge. The Affiliate Challenge acknowledges the tremendous effort put forth by individuals and organizations alike that have made strong and lasting contributions in support of our shared goals to reduce truck emissions and improve freight efficiency. These affiliates serve as role models for other SmartWay affiliates and partners.
The challenge was open to all SmartWay Affiliates. Participating organizations submitted information describing the various activities they accomplished during the period of March 1, 2012 to March 1, 2013.
American Trucking Associations
The American Trucking Associations (ATA) is the national trade and safety organization of the United States trucking industry. The association supports efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the nation’s fuel consumption to make this country more energy independent and ensure the trucking industry is as green and fuel efficient as possible. ATA serves as an important SmartWay conduit to fleets including working with state trucking associations to help carriers learn about and join SmartWay. In its outreach efforts, ATA hosted over a dozen meetings and educational sessions in which SmartWay was featured, including hosting the 2012 SmartWay Excellence Awards at the American Trucking Associations annual Management Conference & Exhibition. ATA contributes expertise in the form of sharing data with SmartWay, and by reaching out to national leaders to inform our nation’s ongoing dialogue on sustainable goods movement, as it relates to the interrelated topics of our economy, energy security and of climate change.
Colorado Motor Carriers Association
The Colorado Motor Carriers Association (CMCA) is the voice of trucking in the state of Colorado. CMCA works with EPA and other partners including the Regional Air Quality Council and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to educate its members throughout Colorado about the SmartWay program. For the period March 2012 to March 2013, CMCA actively partnered with a variety of organizations and fuel and equipment suppliers to promote the goals and benefits of SmartWay. The results have been impressive. The majority of Colorado’s member carriers use at least one approved SmartWay verified technology, which has significantly reduced diesel emissions and fuel use. Over the last year, CMCA hosted over 10 workshops highlighting SmartWay benefits and as a result were instrumental in signing up three partners to the program. In addition, CMCA hosted a recognition program for SmartWay partners who have shown leadership and commitment to improving the environment. CMCA also reached out to shippers with programs and awards and this has really developed into a strong partnership that puts fleets in front of shippers and therefore creates ways to make the program stronger.
Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy
The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy was established under the leadership of America’s dairy farmers through Dairy Management Inc , the non- profit organization that manages the producer check off program. It is the first of its kind to bring together milk producers, processors and manufacturers. As part of the sustainability initiatives of the Innovation Center, they have completed numerous activities to promote SmartWay Transport Partnership and the Environmental Protection Agency. Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy introduced SmartWay to the International Dairy Federation (IDF) who joined as a SmartWay Affiliate. The two dairy associations worked together to host a recruiting and informational webinar on the SmartWay program which provided SmartWay an opportunity to educate several large dairy shippers about the benefits of SmartWay. In addition, Innovation Center has showcased SmartWay during dozens of presentations to industry stakeholder groups, i.e., Cooperatives, Processors, Retailers and Brands, including hosting webinars to communicate opportunities for fuel savings through efficiency programs including SmartWay. Innovation Center ensures that their Dairy FleetSmart tool is an effective complement to the SmartWay carrier tool and links to information about the SmartWay program. The mission and goals of SmartWay are highlighted in high visibility documents including their annual report which is distributed to hundreds of shareholders.
North Central Texas Council of Governments
The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is a voluntary association of, by and for local governments, established to assist local governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and coordinating for sound regional development. NCTCOG promotes the SmartWay program within a 16 county region of North Central Texas, centered in the two urban centers of Dallas and Fort Worth. NCTCOG provides education and outreach about SmartWay and sustainable transportation to potential partners and affected industries with in this area. In an innovative effort to reduce emissions from passenger cars, NCTCOG diligently promoted SmartWay certified vehicles through the development of a marketing program called Air Check Texas Drive a Clean Machine Program. Over the last year, information on this campaign reached approximately 1000 participants and dealerships in the region. NCTCOG educates their members on idling reduction strategies as these complement SmartWay’s mission and purpose. As part of its commitment to the goals of the partnership, NCTCOG hosted a SmartWay Transport Partnership webinar in which over 700 individuals were invited to learn more about SmartWay.
Penske Truck Leasing
A leading global transportation services provider, Penske Truck Leasing (TL) has multiple dedicated web pages on the www.GoPenske.com web site describing and detailing community involvement, environmental stewardship, and their partnership with SmartWay across all of their business units. Penske’s website has a social marketing component including a blog demonstrating how Penske TL supports its customers in meeting their sustainability goals. Penske goes one step further by providing SmartWay designated tractors and trailers through a leasing arrangement for its customers. Co-branding is important to Penske TL and the company ensures that it highlights the SmartWay Affiliate logo in customer specific presentations. Penske TL held numerous educational sessions that include SmartWay approaches and is one of the few Affiliates able to demonstrate the impact of new engine technology through the SmartWay Truck Tool. Penske provides education and strategy development for customers with interest in joining the SmartWay Transport Partnership and provides additional value to its customers by reviewing and assisting with the completion of the SmartWay Truck Tool. As a result of this additional support to their customers, Penske successfully recruited five new carrier partners to the SmartWay program.
Retail Industry Leaders Association
Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) is an international alliance of retailers and retail product and service suppliers. Last year, RILA actively educated and informed its members about SmartWay goals at high profile retail industry events including the RILA Sustainability Conference and the RILA Supply Chain Conference. RILA highlighted the benefits of SmartWay in two editions of RILA’s on line newsletter, which is distributed to hundreds of contacts in the retail industry. The association supported the development of a SmartWay marketing and recruiting video by contributing members and staff to speak on camera about the environmental and economic benefits that SmartWay offers to the business community. RILA is actively engaged in social media efforts and hosted a live Twitter chat to discuss its new Retail Sustainability Report which features SmartWay in multiple sections of the report. During the twitter chat, RILA mentioned SmartWay and our new video which was re-tweeted hundreds of times. A representative from RILA has been actively engaged in EPA’s Mobile Sources Technical Review Subcommittee providing input on ways to accelerate and sustain continued legacy fleet efficiency improvements in the trucking and rail sectors. Lastly, RILA’s Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions webpage features SmartWay as a resource for reducing emissions.
Wisconsin Clean Cities
Wisconsin Clean Cities (WCC) is a coalition that partners with stakeholders in the public and private sectors to encourage all fleets and vehicle owners to reduce their petroleum use. In addition to supporting alternative fuels and advanced technologies on their website, WCC provides education regarding the SmartWay program and the way it can assist Wisconsin fleets in reducing fuel costs and improving air quality. To increase participation in the SmartWay partnership, WCC hosted an idle reduction workshop which featured presentations on SmartWay verified technologies and methods to reduce idling time. To further promote the SmartWay program, WCC contacted five Wisconsin fleets to educate them about SmartWay and the many ways it can benefit them. WCC has seen significant increase in the interest of Wisconsin trucking fleets to reduce their petroleum consumption by using SmartWay strategies. WCC has reinvigorated and empowered Wisconsin fleets and the public regarding their transportation fueling needs.
