"We at 3M are committed to the continued reduction of our company's impact on the environment, including our greenhouse gas emissions. The Climate Leaders program provides a framework for voluntary action and fits well with 3M's larger, worldwide program for greenhouse gas emission reductions." - Dr. Katherine E. Reed, Staff vice president, Environmental, Health and Safety Operations
Reasons for Joining Climate Leaders
3M's commitment is to actively contribute to sustainable development through environmental protection, social responsibility and economic progress. Sound greenhouse gas management is an important part of this commitment.
GHG Reductions Before Joining Climate Leaders
3M's GHG emissions reductions from a 1990 base year can be viewed at the following link: Reducing Greenhouse Gases.
Approach to GHG Management
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions are a priority for 3M. 3M is taking voluntary, responsible action to reduce its GHG emissions. In addition to 3M's Climate Leaders goal, the company has set a goal to reduce its worldwide GHG emissions by 50 percent (from a 1990 base year). The emission-reduction goals include both Kyoto and non-Kyoto gases and are being accomplished through manufacturing process improvements, energy conservation and additional pollution control equipment.

Energy efficiency is an important part of reaching the company's GHG reduction goals. Strong energy conservation strategies have helped 3M achieve a 77 percent improvement in energy efficiency since 1973. Since 1990, the company's energy requirements have increased with the installation of energy-intensive, pollution control equipment to reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). At the end of 2005, 3M had reduced VOCs by 95 percent from 1990 levels. 3M has been making advances in solventless technology since 1990. As 3M's solventless manufacturing processes advance, the need for emission controls and associated energy demands will decrease.
Progress Towards Goal Completion
3M reduced U.S. absolute GHG emissions, in 2005, by 37 percent from a 2002 base year, and will work to maintain or further reduce this level through its goal year of 2007.
