Company Description
Cisco is the worldwide leader in networking that transforms how people connect, communicate and collaborate. Cisco technology enables people to make powerful connections—whether in business, education, philanthropy, or creativity. Cisco hardware, software, and service offerings are used to create the Internet solutions that make networks possible—providing easy access to information anywhere, at any time.
Reasons for Joining Climate Leaders
Cisco's Corporate Social Responsibility practices are woven into our culture; they form the fabric of our day-to-day operations and fall into four categories: our employees, social investments, the environment and sustainable business practices.

Cisco joined EPA's Climate Leaders program to demonstrate the company's commitment to environmental sustainability through greenhouse gas reductions. Through Climate Leaders, Cisco will work to help to preserve the environment while at the same time reducing its own greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs.
Approach to GHG Management
Cisco is committed to responsible environmental practices and greenhouse gas reduction throughout our business operations, our culture and our product design and manufacture. Cisco has innovative programs designed to increase the energy efficiency of our operations, reduce waste and protect the environment in communities where we work. Cisco conforms to many international standards and makes protecting the environment a top priority. Through the power of the Human Network, Cisco technology can help people live, work, play and learn in a more environmentally responsible way.

Cisco's environmental policy provides guidelines for five categories of programs that serve Cisco's environmental mission: product design, recycling and waste reduction, environmental management, community and energy conservation.

These programs cover a wide range of environmental initiatives-everything from developing environmentally friendly product packaging and sophisticated product take-back programs to building energy-efficient, environmentally friendly facilities.

Cisco is very proud to have been ISO 14001 certified since 2000.

Cisco maintains a recycling and waste-reduction program based on reducing, reusing, and recycling at all corporate sites in the Americas. Cisco measures recycling progress by auditing many variables, such as the diversion rate (i.e., how much material is kept out of landfills). Since the recycling and waste-reduction program began at Cisco, the diversion rate at corporate sites has risen from less than 30% to more than 60%.

Cisco's ordinary business operations include management of transportation used for logistical purposes -- ensuring optimal routing and minimizing environmental impact. Cisco offers employees incentives to utilize Alternative Transportation, not only in their daily commute, but also during working hours.

Cisco has implemented or utilized many energy saving measures across its facilities. In San Jose, for instance, the annual energy savings are about 49,000,000 kwh, enough to power 5000 homes. In addition, the Energy Management Team at Cisco has initiated several programs designed to reduce energy usage in Cisco buildings, including The 78 Degree Plan and various Energy Efficiency Measures for labs.

Energy conservation at Cisco Systems helps control energy costs and lessen environmental impacts. Cisco uses innovative facility design, including state-of-the-art control systems and high-efficiency chillers in new buildings. Cisco also encourages responsible environmental practices among employees through employee communications. For instance, employees receive e-mail messages about environmental events and when energy usage is particularly crucial; for example, on hot days when air conditioning usage reaches peak levels. Employees are also encouraged to take advantage of collaborative technology such as TelePresence to conduct face-to-face meetings without having to travel.
