| Company Description EMC Corporation provides products, services, and solutions for information management and storage that help organizations extract the maximum value from their information, at the lowest total cost, across every point in the information lifecycle. Established in 1979, EMC is represented by EMC direct sales and distribution partners in more than 50 countries. EMC systems are manufactured in Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Ireland. With 2004 revenues of approximately $8.23 billion, EMC employs more than 25,000 people worldwide. As an industry leader that adheres to high standards of quality and integrity, EMC is committed to conducting operations in an environmentally responsible manner. The company's environmental mission emphasizes a constant focus on providing a clean environment for employees, customers, shareholders, and neighbors worldwide. "EMC is proud to partner with EPA and the Climate Leaders program to achieve the important goal of reducing global greenhouse gas emissions," says Dan Fitzgerald, Vice President of Global Facilities and Real Estate. "Recognizing that energy consumption could contribute to global warming, EMC has actively pursued a variety of energy saving programs. However, additional reduction opportunities exist at some of our facilities, and, with welcome guidance from the EPA, we continue to identify solutions that will further reduce our greenhouse gas emissions." | |
| Reasons for Joining Climate Leaders EMC has established environmental systems that meet or exceed the requirements of applicable environmental laws and industry standards. EMC's manufacturing facilities are certified to the ISO 14001 environmental management standard. EMC's commitment to the environment goes beyond regulatory compliance by voluntarily adopting programs that benefit the environment. The company's proactive approach concentrates on prevention, not reaction. EMC joined EPA's Climate Leaders program as part of this philosophy. Through Climate Leaders, EMC measures GHG emissions for its U.S. sites. As part of this inventory process, the company tracks consumption of electricity, diesel fuel, natural gas, and jet fuel, and determines the best opportunities for reduction. By consuming less, EMC helps to preserve the environment while at the same time reducing its own energy costs. As an added benefit, participation in this highly recognized program demonstrates EMC's commitment to the environment to its customers, neighbors, and investors. | |
| GHG Reductions Before Joining Climate Leaders EMC participates in the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection's Rideshare Program, which focuses on reducing pollution through carpooling and other commuter options. In 2004 and 2005, EPA, together with the U.S. Department of Transportation, presented EMC a certificate recognizing EMC as one of the best workplaces for commuters in the state. In addition to the GHG benefits of the program, EMC has prevented approximately 30 tons of local air pollutants from being generated since it began participation in Rideshare. | |
| Approach to GHG Management In compiling the Climate Leaders Inventory Management Plan (IMP), EMC evaluated its emission sources and tracking procedures. Through this process, the company explored the finer details of managing various emission sources. EMC was able to verify site utility accounts and make necessary changes. In the case of the company's mobile sources, the process encouraged EMC to organize information for each vehicle in a more useful manner. This evaluation has led to a more thorough understanding of EMC's GHG emissions. By looking at all potential GHG sources, EMC has been able to identify the major and minor sources of GHG emissions at its facilities. EMC has measured GHGs from electricity consumption versus mobile sources and refrigerant use, and it has become clear that the company will initially focus its reduction efforts on reducing energy consumption to achieve the best results. Goal setting was a very interactive process between EMC staff representing key regions across the United States. The company's Climate Leaders goal was determined via a series of meetings between EMC's Environmental and Facilities Departments. Various normalization goals were proposed, and the advantages and disadvantages of each were considered. The result of this process is that EMC pledges to reduce U.S. GHG emissions by 8 percent per square foot from 2005 to 2012. One of the challenges in developing this goal was the amount of information required to track for the normalization factor. Capturing all of this information required a comprehensive effort. EMC also found that setting a goal with a square-foot normalization factor was challenging given the currently low occupancy rates in its existing buildings. Some buildings are expected to reach full occupancy over the course of the goal period, thus increasing the energy consumption per square foot over that time period. | |
| Progress Towards Goal Completion EMC is exploring a variety of energy saving options for its facilities as part of its overall GHG management strategy including installation of office light sensors, high efficiency boilers, and computer monitor energy-saver functions. The company is also investigating high bay lighting replacement, new chiller set back temperatures, and heat source configuration changes to the company's manufacturing processes. | |
