2009 SunWise with SHADE Poster Contest Winner
SunWise again teamed up with the SHADE Foundation of America and WeatherBug Schools to put
on the 2009 SunWise SHADE Poster Contest in all 50 states and territories. Over the seven years of the contest's
existence, the total number of students participating has exceeded 80,000.
Posters submitted to the contest are original, creative and suggest ways
to prevent skin cancer and raise sun safety awareness. Examples of prevention
and awareness tips presented on the posters include:
- using sunscreen
- wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
- seeking shade when the sun's UV radiation is most intense between 10
a.m. and 4 p.m.
- covering up with full-length clothing to protect one’s skin
- checking the Ultraviolet (UV) Index
2009 State Prizes*:
- Digital camera for the winning child
- Sun UV Station for the school (value: $99)
- One gallon pump bottle of sunscreen for the school (value: $200)
- A box of 3,000 UV-sensitive beads (value: $55)
- Classroom supply pack from Sharpie
*Some states have additional prizes.
2009 National Prizes:
- A family trip to Disney World for the student (value: $2,500)
- A WeatherBug Tracking Station with lifetime
access to WeatherBug Achieve (value: $6,490)
- mimio Interactive Board for the winning student's school
Bob Varney, then EPA New England Regional Administrator, joined SHADE Foundation founders Shonda and Curt Schilling at Boston's
Fenway Park in 2008 to celebrate the six New England winners. Read the Press Release.
