Outreach and Communication
Technical Review Workgroup - Asbestos Committee This webpage contains information on EPA's TRW Asbestos Committee, which is an interoffice workgroup that develops guidance and policy concerning site assessment and cleanup at hazardous waste sites contaminated by asbestos. The asbestos committee also provides site consultation in support of regional requests and identifies research needs relevant to asbestos site assessment activities.
Regional and State Contacts This webpage contains contact information for the Regional Asbestos Coordinators and the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) Asbestos Coordinators that oversee asbestos efforts within each EPA Region.
Frequently Asked Questions About Asbestos Investigation, Risk, Removal, and Remediation This webpage is part of EPA's Asbestos Compendium of Technical Resources. Questions and answers are organized into three major categories: sampling and analytical, risk, and removal and remedial issues.
Current Best Practices for Vermiculite Attic Insulation - Joint EPA/ATSDR brochure (May 2003) (PDF) (3pp/598KB) This is a general information brochure for the public on how to recognize vermiculite insulation in the home, what to do if it is in found, and where to get information on testing and removal of asbestos.
Asbestos and Other Mineral Fibers: A Roadmap for Scientific Research, NIOSH Docket Number NIOSH-099 This webpage contains the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's 2007 draft of this document (57pp/4,010KB), supporting materials, and comments received on the draft. The roadmap summarizes NIOSH's current understanding of occupational exposure and toxicity issues concerning asbestos and other mineral fibers, and it outlines a research program to answer current scientific questions, reduce scientific uncertainties, and support future policy development.
Naturally Occurring Asbestos: Approaches for Reducing Exposure (March 2008) (PDF) (7pp/217KB) This fact sheet provides state and local government officials and other environmental professionals with general information and references on management approaches to reduce exposures to naturally occurring asbestos.
Presentations and Training
Analytical Methodology: Methods, Data Capture, and QA/QC (June 2006 Presentation at NARPM) (PDF) (24pg/717KB) In her slides, Mary Goldade of EPA Region 8 emphasized confounding problems involved with asbestos analysis, the draft Superfund TEM method for analysis of air and dust samples, counting procedures, and other related topics.
Asbestos Site Assessment Framework: Self-guided Training (PDF) (88pp/16.0 MB) EPA's TRW Asbestos Committee produced these training slides as a broad overview of EPA's asbestos framework. The slides outline the framework and include asbestos definitions and morphology, asbestos sampling recommendations, examples of activity based sampling, asbestos laboratory analysis recommendations, and asbestos risk assessment recommendations.
Activity-based Sampling for Asbestos (June 2006 Presentation at NARPM) (PDF) (23pg/988KB) In his slides, Brian Brass of EPA's Environmental Response Team, covers why activity based sampling is important, air sampling procedures and issues, laboratory analytical methods, and where to obtain guidance and assistance.
