Photos - Mononghela River

The collapse of a large oil storage tank at the Ashland Oil Company resulted in large amounts of oil being released into the Mononghela River in Pennsylvania. The oil also flowed into the Ohio River, threatening drinking water sources, wildlife, and river ecosystems. EPA directed all clean-up operations, with the cooperation of federal and state environment and health-related agencies. This photo shows part of the clean-up process, which included mechanical methods as well as river monitoring systems.
