Photos - Lake/Marsh Clean-up
When oil is spilled into a lake or marsh, it can collect around the reeds and other grasses around the shoreline. Cleanups in these environments are particularly challenging for responders, due to the difficulty of getting personnel and equipment to the affected areas as well as the sensitivity of these ecosystems. Here responders have placed straw on the ground to both collect the spilled oil and protect the reeds. Shoreline plants require special attention because of their important ecological role as food sources, nesting grounds, and shelter for small animals. |
