NPL Site Narrative for Follansbee Site

Follansbee, West Virginia

Federal Register Notice:  September 8, 1983

Conditions at listing (December 1982): The Follansbee Site covers 26.5 acres on the Ohio River in Follansbee, West Virginia. Ground water under the site is contaminated with high concentrations of phenol. The site is owned by Koppers Co. and has been operating for over 50 years.

Status (July 1983): Koppers has installed a trench to intercept the contaminated ground water as it leaves the plant site. The ground water is pumped to the company's waste water treatment facility. The company has installed a second pump in an attempt to prevent the contaminated ground water from reaching the Ohio River, as well as to control the flow of ground water. The company and EPA are negotiating further cleanup at the site, and several possibilities are being considered.
