Research, Tools & Technologies

About Policies & Programs Research, Tools & Technologies Assessments & Performance Measures

Aquatic Stressor Research. EPA uses a unified approach to study and diagnose the most serious threats to our nation's waters: habitat alteration, nutrients, suspended and bedded sediments, and toxic chemicals.

Atlantic Ecology Research Laboratory. This laboratory is operated by the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory of EPA's Office of Research and Development.

Better Assessment Science Integrating Point and Nonpoint Sources (BASINS). This site describes a multipurpose environmental analysis system for use by regional, state, and local agencies in studying watershed and water quality.

Ecosystem Protection Research. This site describes the major areas of EPA's ecosystem protection research: Condition, Diagnosis and Forecasting, and Integrated Assessment.

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP). This EPA research program develops tools for monitoring and assessing status and trends of national ecological resources.

Forest Products: Industry of the Future. This is one of eight energy- and waste-intensive industries that are collaborating with the Department of Energy's "Industries of the Future" research and development program.

Global Change Research Program. This assessment-oriented program seeks to better understand the potential consequences of climate variability and change on human health, ecosystems, and socioeconomic systems in the U.S.

Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Task Force and Action Plan. The Task Force has published several outreach materials that provide an overview of hypoxia, describe a strategy to reduce nutrient entering the Gulf, and summarize actions to reduce hypoxia and implement the 2008 Action Plan.

Gulf of Mexico Research Laboratory. This site presents an electronic handbook produced by EPA's National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory.

Landscape Ecology Research Projects. This site provides easy access to landscape ecology research projects.

Mid-Continental Research Laboratory. This site describes the Mid-Continent Ecology Division of EPA's National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory.

Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA). Exit EPA Disclaimer The MA report, Ecosystems and Human Well-being: Opportunities and Challenges for Business and Industry, synthesizes and integrates findings for small and large businesses in industrialized and developing nations.

Regional Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (REMAP). This EPA program tests the applicability of the EMAP approach for answering questions about ecological conditions at regional and local scales.

Regional Vulnerability Assessment (ReVA). This site describes an approach to regional, priority-setting assessment being developed by EPA's Office of Research and Development.

SEQL: Sustainable Environment for Quality of Life. Exit EPA Disclaimer SEQL is an integrated environmental initiative to improve the regional environment in the 15-county greater Charlotte-Rock Hill region in North and South Carolina.

Technical Tools for Watershed Management. Data systems, databases, mapping datasets, and water quality models.

Tools of Watershed Protection in Developing Areas. This is a module outlining a watershed protection approach that applies eight tools to protect or restore aquatic resources in an urbanized or developing watershed.

Water Quality Models. This site provides links to information on water models that simulate how precipitation and pollutants move from the ground surface through pipe and channel networks, storage treatment units, and finally to receiving waters.

Water Science Research. EPA works with partners and stakeholders to develop the scientific and technological foundations to achieve clean water.

Water Quality Research Program. The mission of this program is to protect human health and the environment by providing methods, approaches, and tools needed to assess, restore and protect aquatic systems and provide measurable improvement in water quality.

Western Research Laboratory. This laboratory is affiliated with the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory of EPA's Office of Research and Development.

Wetlands Education. This site provides links to non-EPA sites concerning activities, curriculum/guides, education programs, and teaching tools.
