October 16-17, 2006 - Strategies for Job Development and Training in Brownfields Communities Workshop
The Hazardous Materials Training and Research Institute (HMTRI), through a cooperative agreement with the US EPA, will sponsor this one and a half day information session. Additionally, HMTRI will cover lodging costs for two nights for attendees from out of town. A continental breakfast and a working dinner will also be provided on Tuesday. Local governmental agencies, non-profit, faith-based, and community-based organizations, local workforce investment boards, brownfields assessment and cleanup grantees, and local community colleges and universities are encouraged to attend.

October 30 - November 1, 2006 -Land Revitalization Summit in Austin, Texas
EPA Region 6 will host its first cross program Land Revitalization Summit in Austin, Texas from October 30, through November 1, 2006. The purpose of the Summit is to promote Land Revitalization as a part of State and Federal cleanup programs. The meeting will allow state agencies, municipalities, developers, lenders, brokers, and others to discuss ways that government can better assist in achieving faster, protective cleanups that will support redevelopment. The Phoenix AwardT Executive Committee is seeking redevelopment projects to recognize for excellence in brownfield redevelopment. Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the project participants will be honored at an awards ceremony during Brownfields 2006 in Boston, November 13-15, 2006. One winner will be selected from each of EPA's ten regions, and one project from outside the United States, as the international winner. Additional special winners also will be selected, including projects that have a significant impact for small communities.

EPA is now accepting applications for the fifth annual National Award for Smart Growth Achievement. This competition is open to local or state governments and other public sector entities that have used the principles of smart growth to create better places. Interested parties are encouraged to submit applications for smart growth activities that have shown significant activity between May 1, 2001, and May 1, 2006. Successful applicants will have incorporated the principles of smart growth to create places that respect community culture and the environment, foster economic development, and enhance quality of life and public health

This seminar is designed to be an introductory session on the role environmental insurance and other risk management mechanisms can play in property cleanup and reuse, considering both benefits and limitations. Risk Management and Redevelopment Approaches- Key players involved with property transactions and their perspectives, and an explanation of current risk management tools.
Environmental Insurance Coverage- Types of environmental insurance products available in the marketplace including typical coverage, terms, premium costs, and timing.
Negotiating Environmental Insurance Coverage and Claims- Process and key players involved with negotiating a policy and filing claims.

The course will be offered in Chicago during the week of June 20, 2005, and in Kansas City during the week of August 1, 2005, and is open to all who may be interested. The course includes presentations by local governments and others who are experienced in Brownfield redevelopment, and hands-on case studies including site visits. This intensive course has received very strong reviews from past participants.

The CI Conference is intended to provide participants awareness and training on how collaborative partnerships, public education, and community involvement can result in better, more implementable environmental decisions.

Brownfields Nonprofit Cleanup Grantee Roundtable, Providence, Rhode Island
The focus of the training will be on fostering a peer-to-peer information exchange among nonprofit brownfields cleanup grant recipients, U.S. EPA Regional Brownfields Cleanup Grant Coordinators, and technical experts. In doing so, nonprofit cleanup grant recipients and 2005 selectees will gain a more thorough understanding of the technical capabilities needed to carry out a successful cleanup project while also allowing an opportunity for 2003 and 2004 nonprofit grantees to share their experiences in conducting cleanup projects. Ultimately, this roundtable will be instrumental in improving the overall institutional capacity of nonprofit organizations engaged in brownfields revitalization. Request for Initial Proposals- Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE) Program. EPA is launching a new grant program to help communities understand and reduce the risk of exposure to toxic chemicals. Through Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE), EPA is offering communities financial and technical assistance to reduce releases of toxic pollutants and minimize exposure to them. CARE will offer funding at two levels. Under Level I, communities will receive approximately $75,000 to establish collaborative partnerships for reducing toxic releases in their environment.
