City of Chicago Makes $500,000 Loan to Clean Up the Amforge Property |
On September 30, 2004, the City of Chicago, Illinois loaned $500,000 to itself to assist with cleanup costs associated with the Amforge property. This intra-governmental loan was made possible through a $500,000 EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to the City of Chicago in 1999. The Amforge property was first utilized in the 1930s by North American Aviation, an aircraft manufacturer, until Rockwell International obtained ownership of the property in 1967. Rockwell International manufactured industrial machinery at the Amforge property until it closed down in the late 1980s. In December 1998, the City of Chicago received ownership of the Amforge property through a tax reactivation program and decided to clean up and redevelop the property. Cleanup of the property was completed in 2005 and included the removal of soils contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Redevelopment plans for the Amforge property are still under development.
