State of Indiana Makes $1 Million Loan to Clean Up Fredrickson Park |
On June 4, 2003, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management loaned $1 million to the City of South Bend to assist with the costs associated with the cleanup of 15 acres of the unregulated Fredrickson Park landfill. This loan was made possible through a $1 million EPA Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) grant awarded to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management in September 1997. The removal of volatile organic compounds and metal contamination from the soil and ground water was completed on May 31, 2005. In addition to EPA funding, the city also received $303,696 in local government funding for cleanup of the Fredrickson Park property. The City of South Bend developed the Fredrickson Park Landfill into a 16-acre wetland and prairie habitat with an onsite environmental education center. The redevelopment of Fredrickson Park educates the general public about the native environment and creates an aesthetic and natural escape for the local community.
