Ready for Reuse
Determinations

The concept of identifying when a brownfield or hazardous waste site being addressed or remediated to the extent that it is safe for reuse or redevelopment has been discussed in a variety of EPA offices. Below are activities some offices have taken. Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response Guiding Principles
EPA Region 6 Ready for Reuse InitiativeEPA Region 6 has developed a new, long-term corrective action "measure of success" that recognizes when a site/facility has been addressed or remediated to the extent that it is safe for reuse or redevelopment. This is not intended to be a clean-closure approach; rather, it encourages cleanups that will quickly support protective redevelopment opportunities. As part of this effort, EPA and/or the states will provide a regulatory "determination" -- a technical affirmation that the site is considered acceptable for its intended use. Numerous Ready for Reuse Determinations have been issued to facilities encompassing nearly all EPA/state cleanup programs, including RCRA sites.
