Ready for Reuse Determinations

The concept of identifying when a brownfield or hazardous waste site being addressed or remediated to the extent that it is safe for reuse or redevelopment has been discussed in a variety of EPA offices. Below are activities some offices have taken.

EPA Region 6 Ready for Reuse Initiative

EPA Region 6 has developed a new, long-term corrective action "measure of success" that recognizes when a site/facility has been addressed or remediated to the extent that it is safe for reuse or redevelopment. This is not intended to be a clean-closure approach; rather, it encourages cleanups that will quickly support protective redevelopment opportunities.

As part of this effort, EPA and/or the states will provide a regulatory "determination" -- a technical affirmation that the site is considered acceptable for its intended use. Numerous Ready for Reuse Determinations have been issued to facilities encompassing nearly all EPA/state cleanup programs, including RCRA sites. For more information, go to http://www.epa.gov/earth1r6/ready4reuse/ or contact Jeanne Schulze, EPA Region 6 RCRA Brownfields/Reuse Coordinator, at (214) 665-7254 or schulze.jeanne@epa.gov.
