Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response Takes Active Role in Hurricane Katrina Cleanup

23 – Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) staff
are taking a central role in EPA’s response to Hurricanes Katrina
and Rita. Working with state, local, and other federal officials, OSWER’s
Emergency Response staff is addressing releases and potential releases
of hazardous materials and oil associated with hurricane damage. Some
of the specific activities that OSWER staff is performing include:
- Removal of orphan chemical and oil containers,
- Assessments of chemical and oil facilities and sites,
- Sampling and analysis of contaminated flood waters, flood sediments, soil, air and water bodies.
- Technical assistance to federal, state and local officials regarding the management of debris materials.
