Current EPA Publications on MTBE
The following references represent EPA's current understanding of MTBE issues. Note that the level of understanding is an evolving process and necessarily changes as new information becomes available. Agency publications which chronicle the historical development EPA's understanding with respect to MTBE are provided as an "Annotated Chronological Bibliography of EPA Publications on MTBE."

- Oxygenates in Water: Critical Information and Research Needs (PDF) (77 pp, 221K, About PDF)
From the EPA Office of Research and Development, National Center for Environmental Assesment (NCEA). The report identifies key issues related to assessing and managing the potential health and environmental risks of oxygenate contamination of water. Oxygenates are chemicals added to fuels ("oxyfuels") to increase the oxygen content and thereby reduce emissions from use of the fuel. This document builds on and extends an earlier report, "Oxyfuels Information Needs" (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1996), which included water issues but tended to focus more on inhalation health risk issues.
