Upcoming EPA Guidance Documents
- Performance Monitoring of MNA Remedies for VOCs in Groundwater (PDF) (13 pp, 414K, About PDF)
(EPA/600/R-04/027, April 2004) Environmental monitoring is the major component of any remedy that relies on natural attenuation processes. The objective of this document is to identify data needs and evaluation methods useful for designing monitoring networks and determining remedy effectiveness.
- Site characterization for monitored natural attenuation. Document will describe site characterization data, methods, and study designs used to characterize natural attenuation processes. It is meant to be a companion to the recent chlorinated solvents protocol. Contact: Steve Acree (580)-436-8609.
- Monitored Natural Attenuation of Inorganics. Similar to MNA directive but specifically tailored to inorganics including radioactive contaminants. Note this is under devlopment; initial draft for internal EPA review expected late 2002 or early 2003. Contact: Ron Wilhelm (202)-564-9379.
- "Handbook of Groundwater Protection and Cleanup Policies for RCRA Corrective Action" The direct link to the specific page with the Handbook, fact sheet, and cover letter is http://www.epa.gov/correctiveaction/resource/guidance/gw/gwhandbk/gwhndbk.htm. Contact: Guy Tomassoni (703)-308-8622.
Upcoming/Ongoing Field Investigations
- A Survey to Determine Whether There is an Association Between the Dominant Electron Accepting Process in Ground Water and the Potential for Environmentally Significant Natural Biodegradation of MTBE. Joint project to sample wells in PA and NJ. Agreement between ORD/NRMRL/SPRD and BP Amoco under an MOU signed 4/99. Contact: J.T. Wilson (580)-436-8532.

Training Development
- MNA for Petroleum Hydrocarbon Release Sites on CD-ROM. The basic purpose of this pilot project is to try CD-ROMs as a way of delivering a course to people who could not physically attend. It focuses only on petroeum hydrocarbons as a subset of the full two day course. We believe that state agencies would be a group who would be interested in petroleum hydrocarbons but have travel restrictions. Modules covered include:
- Framework for the Use of MNA and Trends in the Use of MNA presented by Fran Kremer, USEPA,
- Estimating Biodegradation and Attenuation Rate Constants presented by
John Wilson, USEPA,
- (3) Risk Management of MNA presented by John Wilson, USEPA,
- Natural Attenuation of Petroleum Hydrocarbons inf Groundwater presented by John Wilson, USEPA,
- Geochemical Processes and Natural Attenuation presented by Frank Chapelle, US Geological Survey, and
- Site Characterization and Data Interpretation for Evaluation of Natural
Attenuation presented by Kelly Hurt, National Research Council. The package is currently under review. Contact: Joan Colson (513)-569-7501.
