PROJECT UPDATES/ACTION ITEMS
2008 NARPM CONFERENCE
The 2008 NARPM conference will be held the week of July 7th in either Portland, OR, or Pittsburgh, PA. The EF has tentatively scheduled their business sessions for Monday and Thursday afternoons, although these days and times depend on the final NARPM agenda.
Once the NARPM selection committee finalizes the conference agenda, they will notify the session leads if their proposed sessions were selected. The EF proposed the following sessions:
- Green remediation panel session; Mike Gill (Region 9 STL) is the EF lead;
- In-situ bioremediation training; Federal Facilities Forum will lead training with EF co-sponsorship; Gary Miller (Region 6) is the EF contact;
- Application and implication of nanotechnology at Superfund sites; Mary Logan (Region 5) is the lead; Mike Gill is the EF lead; and
- Permeable reactive zones (PRZ) panel session; Gary Miller is the EF lead.
If EF members are interested in helping with these sessions, they should contact the EF lead listed above. Dave Reisman (NRMRL-Cinc.) and Suzanne Davis (CA DTSC) offered to help Gary organize the PRZ session. Gary is looking for additional experts or individuals with PRZ field experience. The EF will not produce a work product relating to the PRZ session.
WINTER 2009 TSP MEETING
The EF is responsible for planning the winter 2009 TSP meeting. The four potential locations submitted by the co-chairs to Linda Fiedler (TIFSD) were Research Triangle Park (NC), New York City, Cape Canaveral (FL), and Santa Fe (NM). Linda will review the suggested locations with Gary Turner (TIFSD) and conduct a preliminary cost/benefit analysis. Once a location has been selected, the EF will begin developing a theme and agenda.
PROJECT UPDATES/ACTION ITEMS
- Julie Santiago (Region 4) volunteered to update the EF brochure to include new members and issue papers. Dave Reisman will send the latest version to Julie, who will update it and send the new version to the co-chairs. The updated brochure will be uploaded to the Science Connector website. The TSP website also needs to be updated to reflect new members.
- Mike Gill thanked those EF members who submitted comments on the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program’s (ESTCP) DNAPL “FAQ’s” document. Mike forwarded the comments to Linda Fiedler, who submitted them to ESTCP. The GW Forum has submitted an extensive list of comments as well. Lindsey Lien (USACE) said USACE submitted comments on the document separately. Mike Gill will forward all TSP comments on the document to EF members.
- Mike Gill updated the evergreen list on the Science Connector website.
- Dave Reisman is in the process of finalizing the Ex-Situ Treatment of Oxygenated Hydrocarbons & Perchlorates in Groundwater issue paper; once the clearance package has been completed and submitted, the document should be ready within a few months (before NARPM).
- Dave Reisman’s contractor has sent him the latest draft of the Technology Alternatives for the Remediation of Soil and Sediment Contaminated with PCBs issue paper; it will be finalized and ready for publication before the NARPM conference.
- Dave Reisman is waiting for final edits on the Indoor Air Vapor Intrusion Mitigation Approaches issue paper; the document should be ready for publication before the NARPM conference.
- Dave Reisman will make 100 hard copies of all newly completed EF issue papers for distribution at NARPM.
- Dave Reisman will keep the EF poster in case the EF wants to display it at NARPM.
- Dave Reisman will ask Steve Rock (NRMRL-Cinc.) to update the EF on the status of the evapotranspiration covers issue paper.
- Kira Lynch (Region 10) said Eva Davis (ORD/NRMRL-Ada) will not have time to work on the In Situ Thermal Treatment issue paper for a several months. Kira recommended that the EF seek contractor assistance with the goal of completing the document before the NARPM conference. Mike Gill will contact Kelly Madalinski (TIFSD) or Linda Fiedler to request contractor assistance in finalizing the document. Mike Davis (Region 7) said he may be able to provide some case studies for the paper.
- Mike Gill has received a revised draft of the on-line resources guide from EMS; he will send additional comments to EMS and await a revised version.
- Terry Burden (Region 6 STL) has the lead on the in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) lessons learned paper. Terry was not on the call, so no update was provided.
- Mike Gill will downgrade the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for O&M Reporting topic to a low priority on the evergreen list.
- Mike Gill will remove the material handling equipment topic from the evergreen list.
- Dave Reisman will send EF members a draft technology performance review document on solidification/stabilization for review in the next few months.
- Hilary Thornton (Region 3) proposed that the EF develop a strategic plan and mission statement to guide future forum activities. The fully developed plan could help justify the EF’s existence, link forum activities to GPRA goals, and more effectively manage the evergreen list. Hilary suggested basing the EF plan on the Triad and ITRC strategic plans. Hilary will upload the draft Triad strategic plan to the Science Connector. Donna McCartney (Region 3), Fred MacMillan (Region 3), Mike Gill, Don Bahnke (Region 7), and Mike Davis (Region 7) volunteered to help Hilary move forward with this project.
