SPRING 2008 CO-CHAIR ELECTION
Jon Bornholm’s (Region 4) term as co-chair of the Engineering Forum (EF) ends this spring. Nominations for his replacement were due to Keith Arnold (EMS) by June 9. Hilary Thornton (Region 3) was the only EF member to be nominated and has agreed to serve. His co-chair term will begin at NARPM in July.
STRATEGIC PLAN STATUS
Hilary Thornton has received a few minor edits to the draft EF strategic plan, which outlines the forum’s mission, goals, and accomplishments. Hilary welcomes any additional feedback or general comments on the plan. Forum members should email any final comments to Hilary (thornton.hilary@epa.gov) by mid June.
ENGINEERING FORUM BROCHURE STATUS
Julie Santiago (Region 4) has drafted an Engineering Forum brochure for distribution at NARPM and to be included as an attachment to the strategic plan. Mike Gill (Region 9 STL) e-mailed the draft to the EF for review on June 4. Bernie Schorle (Region 5) will send a copy of Ed Mead’s (USACE) screening data collection matrix to Julie so she can include information about it in the brochure. Julie will add Raji Josiam (Region 6) to the EF member list and Terry Burton (Region 6 STL), Suzanne Davis (CA DTSC), and John Muegge (CA DTSC) to the “friends of the forum” list. Julie will finalize the brochure, and Hilary will print 50 color copies for distribution at NARPM.
EVERGREEN LIST REVIEW
- Jon Bornholm and Mike Gill reviewed the status of items on the evergreen list. Dave Reisman (NRMRL-Cinc.) was unable to participate on the call, so no updates were available for issue papers being drafted by ORD.
- Jon Bornholm noted that EPA published a fact sheet on transfer of long-term response action (LTRA) projects to states in July 2003. He recommended that this topic be deleted from the evergreen list.
- The completion of Ray Cody’s (Region 1) Indoor Air Vapor Intrusion Mitigation Approaches paper has been delayed. Ray will let the co-chairs and Julie Santiago know when he has a publication number.
- Ellen Rubin reported that she has not yet seen a draft of Steve Rock’s (ORD-Cincinnati) Evapotranspiration Covers issue paper.
- Forum members will ask Eva Davis (ORD-Ada) for an update on the In Situ Thermal Treatment issue paper at the NARPM conference and may drop the item from the evergreen list if nothing is accomplished in the next few months.
- Terry Burton (Region 6 STL) indicated that he and a summer intern will work on the ISCO “lessons-learned document” this summer.
- The Permeable Reactive Zones panel session has been scheduled for July 10 (9:00-10:30 am) at the NARPM conference. Speakers have been lined up.
- Jon Bornholm and Andy Palestini (Region 3) agreed to remove the issue paper dealing with standard operating procedures for O&M reporting from the evergreen list.
2008 NARPM CONFERENCE
EF members planning on attending NARPM should already have registered at www.epanarpm.org/2008. As of June 4, 16 EF members have registered for the conference.EF members who plan on staying at the hotel on Friday night need to notify Gary Turner (TIFSD). Field trip participation justifies a Friday night stay.
If any EF members plan to participate remotely in the afternoon business sessions, they should let the co-chairs know as soon as possible so that a speakerphone and conference line can be ordered. Ellen Rubin said she may call in if she cannot attend the meeting in person, but she will confirm with the co-chairs.
Jon Bornholm reviewed the tentative business session agenda. The EF dinner will be held on Tuesday night. The co-chairs will schedule the discussion on the need for control over publications early in the afternoon on Thursday so Ellen can participate remotely. Hilary Thornton will bring copies of the EF strategic plan to the business sessions at NARPM. During the business sessions, EF members will be asked to ratify the plan. The green remediation discussion will take place during the Thursday business session so that participants can take advantage of information gleaned from Wednesday’s green remediation panel session. Mike Gill will bring 25 copies of the most recently updated evergreen list to the meeting.
If EF members have any additional topics they would like to discuss, they should send them to Jon Bornholm. Jon will assign times and days to business session agenda topics and send a revised draft to EMS. Jon will ask Dave Reisman if the EF poster that was printed several years ago needs to be updated.
WINTER 2009 TSP MEETING
The tentative agenda for the winter 2009 TSP meeting has been sent to the EF co-chairs. The meeting, which will be held in conjunction with USGS, is tentatively scheduled for the week of January 26, 2009. Potential locations include Orlando (FL), Tampa (FL), San Antonio (TX), and Charlotte (NC). EF members will discuss this meeting further at NARPM.
