The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), a 1980 law known commonly as Superfund, authorizes EPA to respond to releases to threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health, welfare, or the environment. CERCLA was amended by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthoriziation Act (SARA) on October 17, 1986.
