     These maps illustrate the modeled risk in 1996, by county, due to inhalation of toxic air pollutants. Map colors indicate national ranges of either estimated lifetime cancer risk or noncancer hazard. A county's shading color shows how its estimated median risk or hazard level compares with all other counties in the nation.

The value displayed in maps is either estimated lifetime cancer risk, expressed as N-in-a-million, or noncancer hazard, expressed as either hazard quotient (for individual pollutants) or hazard index (for multiple pollutants).
