Method 5A - PM Asphalt Roofing (Particulate Matter)
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)This method requires the use of 1,1,1-trichloroethane for probe wash. This product is apparently no longer available or very hard to get. Is there an alternative available for use?We have heard from a number of testers recently that 1,1,1-trichloroethane has become increasingly difficult if not impossible to buy in quantities sufficient to use as a clean-up solvent. Unfortunately, we do not have a suggestion for a suitable replacement solvent at this time. We are planning to begin laboratory work later this year to find a replacement, and the asphalt roofing trade association has similar plans. We hope that by May of 2008 we will have a recommendation for a replacement solvent.
